GEDCOM import into a family tree

Do you keep your family tree in MyHeritage, Ancestry, Gramps or another genealogy program? Then there is nothing to retype. Upload your GEDCOM file to Geneagram and we will draw your data into a beautiful, print-ready family tree template — in minutes.

What is GEDCOM?

GEDCOM (GEnealogical Data COMmunication) is the universal exchange format for genealogical data — a text file with the .ged extension containing persons, relationships, dates and places. Practically every genealogy program and service in the world understands it, so it works as a bridge between them.

How to get a GEDCOM file

  • MyHeritage — in your tree settings choose "Export to GEDCOM"
  • Ancestry — Trees → Tree Settings → Export tree
  • Gramps (free) — Family Trees → Export → GEDCOM
  • FamilySearch and others — search for "export GEDCOM" in the service's help

How the import works in Geneagram

After a free registration you pick a family tree template and choose GEDCOM import instead of manual entry. Upload the file, select the starting person (the proband — the person the tree is built from) and we automatically place your ancestors into the template. Then you just fine-tune fonts, colors and details.

From the imported data we use names, dates and places of birth, marriage and death — exactly what fits into the chart. Your file is used solely to draw your family tree.

What if I don't have a GEDCOM?

No problem at all — you can fill in your ancestors manually right in the editor, one by one. To learn how to gather the data, read our guide on how to make a family tree step by step. You can try the editor for free without registration.
